When Politicians Take Over Medicine

Click to return to start page

Mayor Bloomberg, Mayor on New York City, has moved beyond dictating the size of soft drinks to limiting the amount of painkillers that can be prescribed in the city's public hospitals:

Not all physicians are happy with the restrictions and one wonders about the impact of this on a physician's duty to treat pain adequately.

In response to criticism of his plan, Mayor Bloomberg says some may have to suffer a little bit for the greater good.

I suspect that if the Mayor needs a hip replacement or cardiac bypass he will go to a private hospital where he won't 'have to suffer' even a little bit.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”
